OPTOMETRIST – EYE TEST
The optometrist examines the condition of the visual system and the visual process. He specializes in correcting eye refractive errors (myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism) using glasses, application of contact lenses and other visual aids. He may specialize in conducting vision therapies that improve the functioning of the visual system. His duty is also to correctly detect diseases associated with the visual system and refer the patient to the appropriate specialist (ophthalmologist, neurologist, diabetologist, ...).
The ophthalmologist specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of eye diseases (glaucoma, cataracts, conjunctivitis, cornea and many others), and the prescribing of appropriate medications for the treatment of these diseases (in the form of, for example, eye drops). He may specialize in surgical procedures on the eyes. His tasks also include the examination of eye parameters for glasses correction. A good practice is cooperation between an optometrist and an ophthalmologist.
More information about the profession of optometrist can be found on the website of the Polish Association of Optometry and Optics.
The Polish Optometric Association has defined the scope of the optometric examination.
Due to the multistepness of the optometric exe examination and the necessity to perform many precise measurements, it is not possible to "close" it within a dozen or so minutes. A professional optometric eye test can last an hour and in some cases even longer. Only through a detailed examination it is possible to correctly assess the condition of the visual system and to implement the correct treatment.
